They treat different layers. Exion Face treats the skin itself: radiofrequency warms it and targeted ultrasound is added, and together they heat the deep layers of the dermis, which BTL says stimulates fibroblasts, the skin's repair cells. The skin answers by making more of its own hyaluronic acid, so it is firmer, smoother and better hydrated. EMface, from the same manufacturer, works the muscles that lift the face with high intensity facial electrical stimulation (HIFES) through hands-free pads while radiofrequency warms the skin, so the brow and the cheeks sit higher. Skin that has lost quality is Exion. A face that has dropped is EMface. Many faces have both problems, which is why the two are so often planned together, and our sister clinic provides EMface at the same address, 8 Devonshire Place.
Side by side
- What it works on: Exion Face, the skin; EMface, the lifting muscles and the skin.
- What the studies measured: Exion Face, hyaluronic acid in the skin up 68% at three months in the three adults treated in a 2025 study of seven. EMface, BTL's own trial figures on muscle tone and lift and a published pilot study of ten patients, set out on our sister clinic's site.
- The feel: Exion Face is warm and comfortable, discomfort 2.3 out of 10 in the study; EMface feels like strong muscle contractions with warmth.
- The course: Exion Face, four sessions a week or two apart; EMface, four sessions about a week apart.
- What neither does: add volume, remove fat from the face, or tighten skin that hangs in a fold.
Which one for which face
In our clinical judgment: dull, crepey or thinning skin in the thirties and forties, Exion Face. A brow or cheek that has started to drop, EMface. Both changes, which is most faces from the mid-forties on, both treatments, EMface for the lift and Exion for the skin it lifts. Acne scars and uneven texture are Exion Fractional RF, which reaches scars and deeper texture.
Having both
EMface and Exion Face are planned as one course at the consultation, and the written quote covers both. The sessions page sets out the Exion course, and the full Exion guide compares the treatments at the clinic.
